Burley reeling after Scots loss

Scotland manager George Burley

Scotland manager George Burley remained defiant despite lamenting his side for "falling apart like a pack of cards" in the 3-0 friendly defeat by Wales.

The Scots have gone four away games without scoring and paid dearly for an inept display in Cardiff.

"We're playing different players to score goals and, unfortunately, I can't score them for them," Burley said.

The Tartan Army vented their anger during the game and Burley added: "I'm not surprised, it was very poor."

Scotland have lost 2-0 against Japan and 3-0 to Wales in friendlies since missing out on World Cup qualification.

"You're looking when you play games to get some positives but there were none today"

And the Scotland manager said he was at a loss to explain the manner of defeat in Cardiff against an under-strength Wales side.

"It's ridiculous the way we've conceded the three goals through bad defending," Burley said.

"Never picking runners up, overall, it was shocking the way we conceded them.

"You're looking when you play games to get some positives, but there were none today."

Burley said he thought Scotland were lively for the first 20 minutes, "but then we fell apart like a pack of cards".

"I spoke to the players and I can't explain it," he said. "I'm looking for them as a team to work hard and stick together.

"I felt they were going in the right direction after the last few games, but we've certainly got to look at it again.

"There were a lot of disappointing displays. As a team, we were too easy to beat and that was the case today."

Scotland's defending was "terrible" in the Cardiff City Stadium and Burley added. "It was a shocking performance."

Many of the Scotland supporters inside the stadium showed their disgruntlement with Burley and the Scottish Football Association.

Burley responded: "I'm not surprised. The manner that the team played at times, it was very poor. I was disappointed as well."

Asked if the result would have a bearing on his future as Scotland manager, Burley said: "It's too early to assess it.

"In football, when you're beaten, it's not the luckiest place. I came here on my debut and got beaten 3-0.

"The last time we played here it was 4-0, so it's certainly not the best place for Scotland to come.

"We're playing different players to score goals and, unfortunately, I can't score them for them.

"And we're looking at areas where we could give teams problems. It was a very attacking team and we still didn't score.

"It's my job and we're looking to keep pushing on."
